Weight problems, sedentary routines, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and narcotics may all affect sexual health suggests a new study from Denmark.

The new study was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine and consisted of results that were collected from over 5,500 Danish men and women from 2005. Specific notice was taken in terms of lifestyle factors, and sexual inactivity, in the survey information.

These found that several unhealthy lifestyle habits and characteristics contributed to a decrease in sexual health; with the chances of an affected sexual health by as high as 78% in men and 91% in women in some cases.

Men who suffered from weight problems, for example, were 800% more likely to experience sexual health difficulties, even if maintaining a sexual partner, than men who abused substances even. Women, who had experimented with drugs, also had an increased risk of developing anorgasmia – unable to achieve climax.

“Hopefully our findings can be used in future counselling of patients with unhealthy lifestyles,” said Professor Morten Frisch, lead researcher for the study of the Statens Serum Institut. “Knowing about possible negative consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle to one's sexual health may help people quit smoking, consume less alcohol, exercise more, and lose weight.”

One of the main factors for these lifestyles potentially affecting sexual health is their impact on blood flow and circulation, and the deterioration thereof, because of the role this plays for the body’s responses to arousal.

Members from the journal agree in suggest that improving these facets of lifestyle can significantly decrease the chances of experiencing sexual health problems.
